Wow. Those really are random, but a lot of them are oddly appropriate.

Now a fun challenge would be to write a story from all those. If I weren't already trying to write a story based on a stray comment about a group of songs I mentioned to Brian Slattery, I'd give it a try.

For those of us who know you, many of the answers are more than "oddly appropriate" -- just how "random" was this exercise, Mr. Cheney? Not that we're questioning your integrity... :-)

  2. I have no integrity, so there's nothing to question, but it truly was random! The only things I skipped were repeats of an artist -- it kept coming back to Peter Gabriel for some reason, even though I have more by other people. But that's what so struck me about it all, the ... oddly appropriate nature of it. If I didn't have some really important things to do today, I'd probably repeat the experiment 100 times and see what happened......

  3. Perhaps it is our tendency to force the random into our templates of reason?

  4. Yes, I think you're right, Luke. Certainly, there's a bit of luck in there in that there aren't any complete and obvious non sequiturs, but part of the amusement for me of memes like this is how they create a pattern so open for us to plug things into and build sense from. I actually once wrote a story based on a similar thing -- "New Practical Physics" in Say...What's the Combination, which fit segments of story into the chapter titles of an old physics textbook. The resonances were astounding, and yet I didn't really adjust the story to the titles at all.

  5. I did the meme on my blog and got quite a bit more nonsense than you. :)
